My script doesn't appear under File → Scripts.

Accepted Answer

Try reinstalling the script via File → Scripts → Install Script File… and then restart After Effects. If it still doesn't appear, copy the .jsx or .jsxbin file manually into the After Effects Scripts folder: on macOS that's /Applications/Adobe After Effects [version]/Scripts/, on Windows it's C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects [version]\Support Files\Scripts\.

Question 2

My extension doesn't appear under Window → Extensions.

Extensions must be installed via ZXP Installer or manually — After Effects can't install .zxp files on its own. Make sure you've restarted After Effects after installation. Also confirm the extension is compatible with your version of After Effects.

Question 3

I'm getting a network error or the script can't connect.

Accepted Answer

Some scripts need permission to access the network. Go to Edit → Preferences → Scripting & Expressions (Mac: After Effects → Settings → Scripting & Expressions) and enable "Allow Scripts to Write Files and Access Network". Restart After Effects and try again.

Question 4

The script says my license is invalid.

Accepted Answer

Double-check that you entered your license key exactly as it appeared in your purchase confirmation email — it's case-sensitive. If you've moved to a new machine, your old activation may still be active. Contact us at support@sidequestplugins.com and we'll sort it out.

Question 5

After Effects crashes when I run the script.

Accepted Answer

First, make sure you're running a supported version of After Effects (check the product page). Try restarting After Effects and running the script with no other compositions or projects open. If the crash persists, contact us with your AE version and OS so we can investigate.

The script or extension runs but doesn't do anything.

Accepted Answer

Check that you have a composition open and at least one layer selected (if the tool operates on layers). Some tools also require a specific layer type — check the product documentation for requirements.
